David Lee Roth's Vocals Isolated on Original Van Halen "Running With the Devil" Track

// January 25th, 2008 // No Comments » // Funny Stuff, Music

Oh man, I love this. Without the instruments behind him, it’s crazy how few lyrics he actually sings. So much of it are “yeahs” and screams and all.

Cold Weather Training

These tips are generic enough that they work for cyclists, runners, etc. I’m such a wuss working out outside in the winter, but these are good tips. For me, the balance is finding the right amount of clothing and layers. My feet are always cold, and I don’t think it’s cause of too many layers, etc.

Bloody Omaha

This is amazing, and an amazing amount of work to film and composite this all. Basically, three guys wanted to recreate a landing scene, but it was literally the three of them. So they filmed themselves, the props, effects, etc. all by themselves and then did a bunch of compositing to come up with a pretty cool scene. “Saving Private Ryan” eat your heart out.

Super Mario Brothers 2 DrumsThis is is pretty cool for all of you out there old enough to remember the NES’s heyday with Super Mario Brothers. This Italian drummer (not to be confused with the Italian plumber from the game itself) is playing along with the old 8-bit tracks from Super Mario Brothers 2 and it really adds a lot to the classic gaming themes from our youth.

Contact Lenses With Circuits, Lights A Possible Platform For Superhuman Vision

Circuit EyeEver had desires to have your own heads up display (HUD), matching the capabilities of a Terminator? Probably not, but I can totally see all kinds of applications for this in both work and play as the technology develops and matures.

A surgeon could have their current patient’s vitals just off their periphery. I can envision GPS companies pairing up their devices to something like this for a HUD. A semi transparent overlay could be displayed over your field of vision, showing you when and where to turn. Picture that you’re riding your bike in a paceline and have all the vitals that the Garmin Edge 305 displays (heart rate, cadence, speed, elevation, averages, etc.) in a heads up display, never taking your eyes off the road.

20 Foods To Snack On For Enhanced Productivity

Glass of WaterAs picky of an eater as I am, I was happy to see things on here that I like. It’s on the list, though it’s not really food – water. I’m not sure how water speeds up metabolism, but if that’s true, I’m glad I am in the habit of chugging a bunch of water with and after a meal.

Figs are on the list. Do Figs Newtons count? Love those… always have them on bike ride rest stops when they’re available. Hmm, lots on the list I don’t eat. I need to be having more carrots and pears though.

Also, I wonder why almonds and walnuts are the only nuts singled out?

Let's party like rock stars who only play video gamesMan, there are some hilarious eCards on here. I need to file this one for multiple occasions throughout the year. Where else would you find an eCard that says, “Sorry your birthday is overshadowed by the holiday season” or “I think of you every time I browse my cell phone on the toilet”? They have a bunch of similar messages for every event and situation possible, a lot of them a ton more crude.

One-Window Web Development for OS X

Coda by PanicThis looks like an application that integrates pretty much my whole workflow. I’m downloading it now, to try it out. Maybe I’ll write a review after playing around with it for a few days (or weeks). Just looking through the site’s little demo and its list of features, it seems right up my alley.

Update: The jury going to be out on this one for awhile, as my computer is too slow here at work to use it effectively. Every few keystrokes or mouse clicks, I’m getting the beach ball. We’re supposed to be getting hardware upgrades soon… though I’m not holding my breath.

Inside Source Reveal the Truth About Xbox 360 "Red Ring of Death" Failures

// January 21st, 2008 // No Comments » // Gaming

My Red Ring of DeathLong article, but some nice insight on the Xbox 360 hardware from a former Microsoft employee. He confirms some info that everyone else had kind of already assumed at this point, but it’s nice to get some pseudo-official confirmation.

It sounds like I really do need to get my “new” (refurbished) 360 vertical again to keep it as cool as possible, but our current home theater setup doesn’t really work with the console upright. It would block part of our TV’s screen.

Regardless, this interview offers a bit of an insider’s look. It sounds like even with the new motherboards and processors, the failure rate’s a lot higher than a consumer electronic product should be. Hope my second Xbox isn’t another failure.
