Happy Halloween everyone! I’m looking forward to tonight’s costume party. We even got Amanda to dress up. We’ll have pics tomorrow for sure after my Habitat charity ride tomorrow morning.

In the spirit of Halloween, check out the video below. Sexy mustard!

Hansbrough Has Stress Reaction, Out Indefinitely

Not cool! The season is right around the corner and 2008 national player of the year is an unknown for the season. I’m not really sure what a “stress reaction” is, but I’m hoping it’s something that can mend in time for ACC play after the new year rolls around.

Netflix and TiVo to Partner on Movies

// October 30th, 2008 // No Comments » // Film, HDTV Bits, Internet / Web, TiVo Bytes

This has been in the works for a long time – I’m talking years. It’s great to see it finally come to light. So it’s looking like our living room will be able to stream movies from Netflix to different boxes – our Xbox 360, and our TiVo HD.

The article mentions this new Netflix streaming will only be available to the Series 3, TiVo HD and the new TiVo XL (Basically the TiVo HD with a larger hard drive), the article does not mention HD streaming. It seems at least initially, the Xbox 360 will be the only device receiving HD streaming content from Netflix.

All these high bandwidth files about to come to our living room is making me wish we had Ethernet, rather than wifi to those two devices.

Edit: The site below answers a couple of my questions including HD streams to the TiVo and recommended broadband. The answers are, “Yes to HD Streaming to the TiVos” and 5Mbps or better respectively.

Xbox 360 to Get HD Netflix Streaming First

// October 29th, 2008 // No Comments » // Film, Gaming, HDTV Bits, TV Talk

My Red Ring of DeathThis is pretty exciting – our Xbox 360 consoles are going to get Netflix’s new high definition streaming first. This will be interesting from multiple standpoints:

1. How much buffering will it need to do up front to keep the HD content streaming?
2. How fast a connection will you need to stream HD?
3. How’s the offering of content going to be? The standard definition availability of shows to stream is mediocre. It continues to improve daily, but optimally, everything available through mail would be available to stream, which is obviously Netflix’s goal – hence the name, “Netflix,” rather than “Mailflix”

TWC Gets Official With HD Expansion in the Carolinas

// October 28th, 2008 // No Comments » // HDTV Bits, Local (Raleigh Durham), TV Talk

It seems like just yesterday that I was writing about Time Warner finally expanding our cable lineup’s high definition offering. Oh wait. That was yesterday I wrote about that. Anyway, while on my birthday, I’ll be getting the present of Discovery HD, ESPNU and two other HD channels (possibly.. still have that SDV question), it looks like in total, the Carolinas are getting up to 20 new HD channels.

The transition from analog over the air signals to digital television is right around the corner. In case you’ve missed it, check out this public service announcement about the transition:

Custom Guitar Controllers by Peavey

// October 28th, 2008 // No Comments » // Gaming, Music, Van Halen

So it looks like if you’ve got more money than sense you can get a customized image printed on a guitar hero controller. When I first saw the link on Peavey’s site, I thought it’d be a great way to get the Van Halen red, white and black stripes on a nice looking guitar controller, but there are a few things holding me back:

1. You can only customize the body with a graphic.
2. Prices are not listed, but if it’s anything like their other controllers ($399, are they crazy?!?!), screw that!
3. The controllers are only available for the PS2 currently, with the Wii, Xbox and PS3 coming soon.

Mainly it’s #2 that will keep all but the most crazy and financially irresponsible from pulling the trigger on this one. Granted, they’re made from wood, rather than the plastics of the normal ones, but it’s a freaking video game controller!

Guitar Hero: Metallica

// October 27th, 2008 // No Comments » // Gaming, Metallica, Music, Van Halen

It seems the rumors of a Metallica-based Guitar Hero game were true, making it the second band-themed Guitar Hero game following on the success of the Aerosmith game. Now I just want that red, black and white striped Van Halen-themed Guitar Hero.

Guitar Hero Metallica will be out sometime in 2009.
