Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter is a Full-Fledged Computer

// March 2nd, 2013 // No Comments » // Apple, iOS, iPad, iPhone

There’s been a fair bit of controversy surrounding the successor to Apple’s dock connector — especially the price.

A recent teardown of the Lightning Digital AV adapter (Lightning to HDMI) shows the thing is a little computer — a mini AirPlay device, which does really help justify the price quite a bit.

Password Management: Remembering Just One Password is Easier and Safer

// January 28th, 2013 // No Comments » // Computers, iOS, iPad, iPhone, OS X, Software

This is how I’ve been doing my password management for probably the past five years, and highly recommend a solution similar. I can’t tell you how much of a fan I am of 1Password on both OS X and iOS. Totally worth the cash.

But remember, the biggest security flaw is yourself. Social engineering is by far the highest probability of your account getting compromised, and no password can save you from yourself.

RunKeeper Releases 3.0 iPhone App

// January 2nd, 2013 // No Comments » // Health & Fitness, iOS, iPhone, Software

Just before the new year hit, RunKeeper 3.0 was released. I was quick to download it — RunKeeper and RunKeeper Elite have been mainstays of all my rides, runs and walks. I highly recommend the app if you do any of the previous activities outdoors. Kudos to updating the design and code behind it in order to streamline future updates and features.

Also, I’m very appreciative that they went to 3.0 and didn’t charge existing customers. That’s always appreciated by loyal/faithful customers.

Take a picture of a friend with their face squished against the glass…

Love this. Need to do this with some of my contacts on my iPhone:

Take a picture of a friend with their face squished against the glass. Assign to phone contact.

It’ll look like they’re trapped inside your phone.

It’s simple, but appeals to my sense of humor.

iOS 6: List of All The 200+ New Features

// August 24th, 2012 // 1 Comment » // Apple, iOS, iPad, iPhone

There’s just not the same excitement surrounding iOS 6 as there have been for past versions of the mobile OS — at least not for me.

But, I am a little more excited for its release next month after taking a look at the comprehensive feature list in the article linked below.

E3 2012: Microsoft SmartGlass Connects Xbox to iPhone, iPad

This is something that can and will get some use in our household. Between this announcement and the recent announcement of Amazon Instant Video on Xbox 360, our Xbox 360 in the living room just got a lot more useful.

PercyFX App Launches on iOS and Blackberry

// January 17th, 2012 // No Comments » // Film, iPad, iPhone

Saw this over at bttf.com. I’ve yet to download it to my iPhone, but will check it out in the morning. Seems like it could either be pretty cool, or pretty clunky. I’ll post a followup after I’ve downloaded and played around with.

But just so you know, I’m pretty much a sucker for anything Back to the Future related.

Update: OK, I can already tell you, this is pretty worthless. No video clips are included with the app itself. You have to buy credits to get clips. Then, the clips don’t have the original soundtrack, and most of the text effects are just total cheese. The flying DeLorean that ends Back to the Future and the Hill Valley clock tower getting struck by lightning with a custom message inserted just aren’t worth anything to me. I can’t see getting any utility out of this. Deleted within five minutes of installing. Don’t waste your time.

Video: Siri – “Don’t Drag Me Into This”

// December 9th, 2011 // No Comments » // Apple, Funny Stuff, iPhone, Video

Just heard this parody of the Apple iPhone 4S/Siri commercial when I was listening to the latest episode of This Week in Tech on the drive into work. Too funny.

Apple Confirms No Current Plans to Bring Siri to Older Devices

iPhone 3GSThis is a total bummer, but not in the least surprising. Siri and the camera are the two real differentiators of it over older versions of the iPhone.

Let’s keep in mind too that Siri is still in beta, and still being ramped up. I’m more interested to see how it evolves and if and when it’s integrated into other products.

Five iOS Apps for the Cycling Enthusiast

// July 16th, 2011 // No Comments » // Cycling, iPad, iPhone

Cycling Sign Very timely post over at tuaw.com as the 2011 Tour de France is 14 stages (with Garmin-Cervelo sprinter Thor Hushovd taking yesterday’s stage in his world champion colors).

Here’s a nice little list of apps for the cycling enthusiast. I’d also add RunKeeper app and web site as well. The app is free now. I recently bought the elite setup too so my wife and son can track my rides when I’m out and about on my two wheels. While it’s not as accurate as my Garmin 500 GPS on my handlebars, the near-live location update is great piece-of-mind for the wifey.
