Pure CSS Coke Can

// February 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // Design

A co-worker sent this too me. It’s a rotating Coke can that’s done all with CSS — no Java or JavaScript or anything of the sort. It’s actually all CSS1 stuff with a little CSS2 thrown in the mix. It works with displacement maps for the background image. I must admit though, I’ve only seen displacement maps in

YouTube Videos Available in HTML 5

// January 21st, 2010 // No Comments » // Design, Internet / Web

One of the best things about YouTube being bought by Google awhile back is the server horsepower. But beyond that is the crossover innovation from other Google products. With the recent fight between Google and AT&T/Apple over the Google Voice iPhone app, Google ended up going the HTML5 route then as well. I’m looking forward to the day when all the major browsers support both this and the newest CSS spec.

21 Amazing CSS Techniques You Should Know

// July 31st, 2009 // No Comments » // Design, Internet / Web

CSS HTMLI find a lot of the links and ideas I share on Keefer Madness via my RSS feeds to numerous web sites. But this one came from a link someone shared to the Twitterverse. At first glance, this list of CSS techniques seems pretty impressive and definitely worth checking out and bookmarking for all the fellow web designers/developers.
I have yet to try or utilize any of the CSS procedures, but I’m skeptical on some — on how cross-browser compatible some of them are and also how flexible they are. Regardless, dive in the list, and let me know if you utilize any of these before I get a chance to test some of them out.

Munsell Hue Test

// July 24th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Design, Internet / Web

So here’s a little test to see how well your eyes/brain do with color spectrums. Color blind people need not apply.

I got a 15. Not too shabby. “0″ would a perfect. For doing it real quick on the fly, I’m happy with 15. My three sets of errors were all grouped together.

Kinetic Typography

// April 2nd, 2009 // No Comments » // Design, Film, Funny Stuff, Internet / Web, Video

kinetic typeExcuse the talk about typography here at Keefer Madness – a topic I rarely get into outside of the web safe fonts, but the designers here at work have been working on a project using the concept of kinetic typography, using the visuals of the actual dialog as a major (or the only) component of the display. It’s become pretty mainstream, showing up in a Ford F-150 Commercial (narrated by fast-talking Denis Leary).

But it’s also got a whole subset of videos showing up on YouTube, utilizing movie dialogue. Some are done a lot better than others. Here are a couple of my favorite ones I found, just browsing for a couple minutes:

Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Monty Python & the Quest for the Holy Grail
The Office

As a journalism major, I’m appalled at the number of typos in a lot of these kinetic typography examples, but love the concept. The Pulp Fiction one above is my favorite.

Web Designer/Developers Working Alongside Print Designers with Little to No Web Design/Dev Knowledge

// December 1st, 2008 // No Comments » // Design, Internet / Web

Our newest designer sent me this link today and reading through the comments and discussion is very educational and supports a lot of the complaints I’ve had, converting what designers have put into Photoshop (or good God Illustrator) and translating them into search engine optimized, XHTML validated web sites that work across all the most popular browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7 and Safari are the ones I focus on).

This is a wonderful read for web designer and developer alike and is a good introduction (and more) to designers from a more print-based background. The nature of the web and its ability to be viewed on different operating systems, devices, etc. has different abilities and capabilities than printing something on a physical medium. My biggest complaint again and again are that designers don’t look at the web site from a usability, an updatability and fluidity standpoint. This thread addresses this concern, along with many others.

28 Powerful Photoshop Lighting Effects

While a lot of these could be a bit gimmicky, and only be a value on a rare occasion, some of these would be absolutely great knowledge to have for kicking up a given photo, wallpaper etc. It’s definitely worth a read for multiple of these lighting effects:

In an Iranian Image, a Missile Too Many

// July 10th, 2008 // No Comments » // Computers, Design, News

Photoshopped Missile Launch in IranSo here’s another example of Photoshopping hitting big media. Notice how the two middle missiles are almost completely identical, save a single black dot on the middle right one. Even more noticeable is the exact pattern in the smoke in the middle and right.

Some of the comments after the article and photos suggests it may have been done for composition purposes. I think the unaltered picture shows it was to paint a better/more successful launch than reality where it was visible that one rocket failed to launch from the mobile launch vehicle.

Propaganda comes in many shapes, forms and versions of subtly.
