Good ol’ Lifehacker — always has great.. well life hacks. This one takes an old DVD or CD spindle and with a few parts from the hardware store, you’ve got some nice ambient lighting.

I wouldn’t mind trying my hand at this one, but you have to make sure that wraparound print is done right. That would probably be the most difficult part of the project:

This one is ten ways to mimic store-bought stuff at home, usually cheaper and often better and obviously has the ability to be more custom, including making your own ice cream creations and building a pizza oven at home. I especially like the DIY DTV Antenna and Hackintosh running Snow Leopard, but the whole list is pretty cool.

I have no doubt this would help with the lack of loud enough volume, but I’m not willing to break up the bottom of my phone and void my Apple warranty. It’s really tempting to try just adding a few more holes on the speaker side, but I’ll wait for a more official and less destructive solution.

The two places where the volume is worst is when I get notifications of new text messages and using the speakerphone. I can’t use the speakerphone at all in the car. Thankfully, I’ve got a bluetooth headset for the commutes.
