Printing a Bicycle with a 3D Printer

// September 29th, 2011 // No Comments » // Cycling, Tech, Video

The article said this is oldish news, but it’s the first I’m seeing it. These 3D Printers are freaking awesome. They actually built a bike using a 3D printer. Great demonstration.

Top 10 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Gear (Without Spending Extra Money)

I love these type of articles—hacking and upgrading existing possessions to get more out of them. While all of these aren’t gems, the vast majority are IMHO.

Best Buy Launches Insignia Connected HDTVs With TiVo (and Chumby)

TiVoHmm, can someone explain to me why I would want the TiVo UI integrated into a TV without a DVR? What’s the last TV you’ve used and other than the initial setup, you ever see the UI again. I guess their argument is that the UI is more for the Internet-related applications built into the set, but TiVo to me, and a lot of other consumers is all about the best DVR experience—not for just its user interface.

DIY Guitar Pick Puncher

DIY Guitar Pick PuncherThat thing in the picture looks like a stapler, but that ain’t no Swingline.

I came across this yesterday— a neat way to create your own guitar 351 style picks out of hard plastic. I’m trying to think what I have that I’d use for this though besides old credit cards or rewards memmbership cards.

Regardless, it’s a neat idea for all you fellow axe swingers.

TiVo Premiere Q & Preview Announced (sort of)

// June 12th, 2011 // No Comments » // Tech, TiVo Bytes

TiVoWhile we’re no longer an active TiVo family, they’ll always have a special place in my heart. This article is weird for two reasons: 1) TiVo’s playing catchup with a whole house DVR, but more strangely, 2) they’re doing a non-DVR cable box. Their interface is nice and speedy, so I guess that’s a positive. It’s just weird that there’s no video recording functionality in it.

Proximity Detection on OS X

// June 9th, 2011 // No Comments » // Apple, Software, Tech

Proximity Detection on OS XAt work, I often get up from my computer and forget to pause iTunes. Annoying and a problem I wanted to solve. Initially, I thought I would basically write an AppleScript that would see if Adium (my instant messaging program of choice) was set to away. If it was, check to see if iTunes was playing, and pause. In my research for that though I stumbled upon an even cooler way to solve my issue utilizing bluetooth, a little software and some AppleScript.

Video: Autoglass Envisions the Windshield of 2020

Gotta say I’ve got a weird interest in heads up displays. This video envisions the automobile windshield with integrated HUD. Pretty cool that it helps keep us cyclists a little safer too, with its warnings.

Why We've Come Crawling Back to Cable

// May 10th, 2011 // No Comments » // Personal Crap, Tech, TiVo Bytes, TV Talk

Today marks the first time in nearly a decade where I didn’t have at least one TiVo active in the house. Last Sunday, we re-subscribed to the more-than-basic cable — back to Time Warner’s digital cable tier. While the cost savings of just paying for the basic level of cable were great, we came crawling back for a number of reasons:

Pioneer AppRadio Brings Apps, iPhone Connectivity to Your Dash

// April 30th, 2011 // No Comments » // iPhone, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Tech

Since buying my Subaru Impreza a few years back, I’ve never been totally satisfied with the sound quality or volume its factory stereo puts out. I’ve also wanted to populate that double DIN dash opening with a nice big GPS screen. The announcement of this Pioneer AppRadio that meshes my iPhone with my dashboard couldn’t come at a more opportune time. I’ll be waiting with baited breath to see the products that come out for this, and hopefully reviews will be favorable, leading to an eventual stock radio replacement.

TiVo's Let Me Down

// April 28th, 2011 // No Comments » // Tech, TiVo Bytes

TiVoI used to be the hugest TiVo fanboy in the world. I was an early adopter, having the Sony SVR-2000 years ago, recording analog cable. I’ve recommended numerous TiVos to friends and family alike, and have owned close to a dozen standalone TiVos and DirecTV TiVos combined. I used to look down on those that went the route of the cable or satellite house DVR’s.

But no more.
