DRM Dumpster (Mac)
// April 27th, 2007 // Apple
So I’ve bought over 300 tracks on iTunes, and I’ll probably by as many in the next year or two. But, at work, we all share our music collection via iTunes. No one can copy, steal, etc. this way. They can on stream and listen. The problem though is any purchased tracks cannot be listened to remotely (within our LAN), unless the given computer is authorized. Also, my Xbox 360 can have music streamed to it. But again, not the protected DRM stuff. So because of those, I went out looking for a way to remove the DRM… not because I’m going to post them for others to download, but because I want to use them legitimately. Obviously, Apple sees the flaws in the DRM model as well, as they’re about to start selling un-DRM’ed tracks in the coming months.
But regardless, I used this program at work to remove the DRM through a legitimate method using a CD-RW, a CD-RW drive and a little piece of software that works in conjunction with my Mac and iTunes. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good at automating the process of burning tracks to a CD-RW, then re-ripping them, rinse and repeat.
This site, where I originally found it, has a bunch of nice iTunes related articles/links to software, etc. Lifehacker
