Good News for Bike Commuters: Senate Passes Extenders Bill

// October 2nd, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Cycling

cyclingI just saw this on one of my cycling email lists and wanted to share with all the fellow bike commuters out there. While not substantial, $20 a month would offset those tire repairs, and the occasional maintenance or clothing item needed for a regular bike commute. I’m psyched!

The bill would add an employer-paid qualified bicycle commuting reimbursement fringe benefit as a qualified transportation fringe benefit. A qualified bicycle commuting reimbursement fringe benefit would mean any employer reimbursement to an employee for reasonable expenses incurred by the employee during the calendar year for the purchase and repair of a bicycle, bicycle improvements, and bicycle storage, provided that the bicycle is regularly used for travel between the employee’s residence and place of employment.

The maximum amount that could be excluded from an employee’s gross income for a calendar year on account of a bicycle commuting reimbursement fringe benefit would be the applicable annual limitation for the employee for that calendar year. The applicable annual limitation for an employee for a calendar year would be equal to the product of $20 multiplied by the number of the employee’s qualified bicycle commuting months for the year. The $20 amount would not be indexed for inflation.

A qualified bicycle commuting month would mean, with respect to an employee, any month for which the employee does not receive any other qualified transportation fringe benefit and during which the employee regularly uses a bicycle for a substantial portion of travel between the employee’s residence and place of employment. Thus, no amount would be credited towards an employee’s applicable annual limitation for any month in which an employee’s usage of a bicycle is infrequent or constitutes an insubstantial portion of the employee’s commute. A bicycle commuting reimbursement fringe benefit could not be funded by an elective salary contribution on the part of an employee. The provision would be effective for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2008.

Bike Commuting – Great Supplemental Training & Benefits

// July 30th, 2008 // No Comments » // Cycling, Health & Fitness, Personal Crap

Ryan Keefer, Tricyclist, PosterizedSo I haven’t been very strict as of late watching what I eat, but after lady night’s training ride, I was the lightest I’ve been since college.

While obviously watching what you eat helps, for me – sheer volume of exercise and calorie burning has been my solution.

The past two years, I’ve been spending more and more time in the bike saddle and I don’t see that changing any time soon. I’ve been regularly riding three times a week halfway to work with a total round trip of about 15 miles. That’s netting me 50 minutes of elevating my heart rate, over 1000 calories burned, plus the hilly route is helping me train a bit for my crits and road races.

All of this is in addition to the benefits of less gas burned in the 4Runner, more time outside and some great stress relief.

All in all, I’m finding bike commuting is benefiting me in health, training and a bit in the wallet. I highly recommend anyone that can integrate bike commuting, even once in awhile to do it.

Bike Commuting – The Verdict

// June 6th, 2008 // No Comments » // Cycling, Personal Crap

Cycling So just a few weeks ago, I started doing what I’ve wanted to do for quite a while – bike to work. Unfortunately, I don’t live close enough to work to commute home to work and back. There isn’t a safe and direct route, and even if there were, I’d have to leave way too early at both ends. It’s just not feasible.

So my compromise was the drive part way, and then ride to work from a point closer in. I chose a local mall that ends up being just over 7 miles from work. It’s in a valley, so I end up with some nice climbs both to and from work.

Will Google Add a 'Bike There' Option to Google Maps

// February 29th, 2008 // No Comments » // Cycling, Internet / Web

Saw this post on Bikehugger.com this morning and I know it would be a major undertaking for Google to implement, but it’d be great. While we live pretty far from my office (a 30-40 minute drive), I explored a bike commute route and I had a hell of a time finding a safe, but direct router from here to downtown Raleigh. If Google were able to spit out route sheets, it’d be awesome. Though, in some ways, it wouldn’t be perfect. Ever put in directions from your home to a place you go often? While Google Maps will get you there, it’s usually not the exact route you’d take yourself without Google Maps’ assistance. Regardless, check out the article, and sign the petition.

Mellow Johnny's: A Commuter Bike Shop

// February 24th, 2008 // No Comments » // Cycling

I’ve been meaning to post about Lance Armstrong’s new Texas bike shop for days. It sounds really cool, and so much more than your everyday (but still close to heaven for me) bike shop. Instead, it has a focus on bike commuting – with showers, storage, etc. for the commuter community. I would love for this concept to take off across the nation and internationally.
