The 5 Biggest Pre-Race Fueling Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

// May 18th, 2013 // No Comments » // Cycling, Health & Fitness, Running

Thought this was appropriate for today — as I embark on what’s been sadly the longest ride for me so far in 2013.

Active.com has a nice succinct list of the most common/largest mistakes before a race or long run or ride.

Riding Tour de Cure 2013 Tomorrow

// May 17th, 2013 // No Comments » // Cycling, Personal Crap

So tomorrow I’m riding the Tour de Cure, a fund-raising bike ride with proceeds benefiting the American Diabetes Association originating from Garmin in Cary, NC. I did it last year, and am happy to do it again this year — hoping to make it an annual tradition. I’m undecided whether to play it safe and do the 27 mile route, or push myself and do the 45. My gut is to push it and do the longer one.

I haven’t been on the bike hardly at all, but have done plenty of running, so feel like my conditioning won’t be too bad.

Weigh in and let me know which route I should do. Play it safe at 27, or man it out for the longer 45?

If you’re feeling really generous, feel free to make a donation in my name. My original goal was to raise $200 for the American Diabetes Association, but thanks to my employer, Centerline Digital, I blew through that. New goal is $300. So far, only myself and my parents have contributed to that goal.

Appreciate it!

Nice article from Down Under on the lost art of the group ride, as the the title would suggest.

I’m Plagued with GymPact and RunKeeper Issues

// May 9th, 2013 // No Comments » // Health & Fitness, iOS, Personal Crap

Just wanted to use my blog as a way to vent today. I’m not sure where the fault lies by GymPact and RunKeeper aren’t playing well together lately, and I find myself having to write a lot of support emails.

Nice New York Times article about a Dutch term where the term “Share the Road” actually means that.

I-40 to Close Sunday for Durham Bridge Installation

// April 26th, 2013 // No Comments » // Cycling, Local (Raleigh Durham)

This bridge has been a long time coming. I used to live over in this area after college — four different places over the course of several years before moving into our current house, and the American Tobacco Trail (ATT) is really where I cut my teeth, getting comfortable going good distances on a mountain and subsequently road bikes. I-40 and Southpoint mall though were always a big literal roadblock in the ATT that starts in downtown Durham at the Bulls’ Durham Athletic Park and runs 22+ miles all the way through Chatham and into Wake County.

I’ve had plenty of experience, albeit not lately riding everything in Durham county, though it looks like paving and connections will make it possible to explore even more. Maybe I need to take a weekend ride away from my normal routes, and check out the ATT on the other side of I-40 and Southpoint. Last time I was on that, it was on a mountain bike, and the trail was unpaved.

Avoid the Southpoint area in Southwestern Durham this coming Sunday is the immediate takeaway here though.

After the project is completed in July, we’ll need to take the whole family over to check out the completed trail. Maybe I can do some runs over there as well.

It’s bittersweet to see this all finally happening, though I’ve all but moved away from the area and the utilization of greenways — too many crossings, people walking their dogs, etc. But, it’s pretty awesome to see this coming to completion in the next few months.

P.S. I love how the article above’s comments quickly spiraled down into a political nonsensical debate.

Another cycling-related article from active.com. These five tips are all good and mostly common sense, but good as a reminder/refresher.

12 Great Cycling Jerseys

// April 10th, 2013 // No Comments » // Cycling, Funny Stuff

Haven’t posted to Keefer Madness lately, and it’s been ever longer since I posted anything cycling-related.

This is a nice and humorous list of a dozen cycling jerseys. I can’t see buying any of these, but if anyone were to buy any (well, most) of them for me, I’d wear them on training rides or charity rides.

Love this public service announcement that AAA put out that tries to humanize cyclists. People tend to overlook bike riders as people with families, lives, and are also fellow auto drivers as well.

Even in his confession, he wasn’t truthful. As my wife just said, the guy gets what he deserves and every lawsuit to come.
