Shifting Priorities… Time to Say Goodbye to the Consoles?

// May 15th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Gaming, Personal Crap

Mario Kart WiiSo priorities change as you get older. I keep toying back and forth with getting rid of the Xbox 360 and/or our Nintendo Wii. With a [near] eight month old in the house, and working two jobs, a bit of freelance thrown in the mix, squeezing in some saddle time on the various bikes, plus just the usual day-to-day stuff, there’s not a lot of time left over.

But I keep going back and forth. It’d be great to declutter the living room, and make a few bucks on stuff that’s been basically collecting dust for most of 2010.

But on the other hand, they’re still fully enjoyable when they do get the rare boot up — when friends and family are over, or when I get an even rarer solo game on the 360 in. I haven’t bought a game in awhile, getting the last few for both consoles as gifts, so it’s not really costing me a dime to keep them. Thoughts? Opinions?

Hot Wheels Custom Motors Cup Challenge

// March 15th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Gaming, Internet / Web, Video

hot-wheels-custom-motorsI’m seeing more and more of these on the web. It’s kind of a modern-day version of the old “Choose Your Own Adventure,” but with Hot Wheels and YouTube videos. A little search, and you can find a ton of these on YouTube.

This one is really well done and is a ton of fun trying different a combination of customizations for both vehicles to win the races. This looks great, and is a fun little diversion. I love the announcer as well &mdsah; “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!” This brings back memories of an old SNES game called “Rock N Roll Racing” too where you could customize cars and it was pretty much an anything

Netflix Streaming Heading to Nintendo Wii

// January 16th, 2010 // No Comments » // Film, Gaming, Internet / Web, Tech

Nintendo WiiSo this is old news from earlier in the week, but thought I’d post it for others who hadn’t read yet. It seems another device in many living rooms will be added to the growing list of Netflix streaming capable devices. This time, it’s the Nintendo Wii — this Spring. Like the Sony Playstation 3, the Wii’s implementation will require a disc to accomplish the streaming. Since the Wii is standard def, the streaming will be limited to standard definition obviously.

So now our household has three devices (on top of our computers) that are capable of streaming Netflix movies. Now if Netflix were able to offer a better selections of movies available instantly.

Back to the Future Delorean Crysis Mod

// November 23rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Film, Gaming, Video

Never have played Crysis. I don’t have a PC that has anywhere near the hardware specifications needed to make the game roar to life. But the Back to the Future fanboy in me is just drooling over this BTTF Delorean mod to the game. The details are great. The interior looks good. It disappears at 88 miles per mile complete with the dual flame trails. Plus, when the time vehicle rematerializes, it even has the ice covering the body of the vehicle after the triple sonic booms. Very cool mod to the game.

Finally Found a Few Video Games the Wife Will Play

// July 20th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Gaming, Personal Crap

Mario Kart WiiSo the wife isn’t really what you’d call a gamer. She’s perfectly content to sit and surf the web or nap with the Beagle as I play the Xbox 360.

Right after Christmas, we got a Nintendo Wii with Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Wii Play. That got Amanda playing for a bit, but like a lot of Wii owners, those couple games eventually grew tired. So for months, our Wii has sat idle, collecting dust and neiher Amanda nor I played the console a bit. I’ve played a fair amount of 360.

Puzzle Quest GalactrixBut I’m a bit psyched as I’ve found a pair of games that Amanda will actually sit and play with me. The first is on the Xbox 360 — an Xbox Live title called Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, a space-based puzzle game. I’ve actually gotten Amanda into the versus matches in the game and she’s also gotten pretty good.

Then, this past weekend, we got the first new game for the Wii since we got the console — the newest in the long line of Nintendo racers: Mario Kart Wii. Amanda’s picked that one up quick, and the Grand Prix team mode is especially fun to play in two player mode.

Hopefully, we’ll get some more quality two player quality gaming in out of this pair of games, and maybe even more down the road!

24 iPhone Game Trailer

So it looks like a graphical decent “24″ themed is making its way to iPhones and iPod Touches. Let’s hope it’s better than the “24″ game back on the Playstation 2.

Auditorium Flash Game

Auditorium Flash GameHere’s a very pretty (both visually and audibly) puzzle game, utilizing circles where you bend light particles. I first heard about it on the Totally Rad Show video podcast.

It’s a nice melodic orchestral (piano and strings mainly) puzzle game. It’s hard to explain, but it’s easy to play and amazingly soothing, even when you’re stuck on a given level.

Xbox 360's Dead Online Games

// August 12th, 2008 // No Comments » // Gaming

My Red Ring of DeathGreat article about where old Xbox Live-enabled games go to die. Bret and I experienced this playing NHL ’07. While we weren’t looking for other opponents, the lobbies were almost always vacant sans us.

The other piece the other article doesn’t mention is the evolution of the lobbies, and matchmaking of these games. NHL ’07 was so clunky, slow and painful to utilize over some of the newer games process for setting up opponents and online matches.

Rock Band 2 Hands-On

// July 9th, 2008 // No Comments » // Gaming, Music

Rock BandSo it sounds like Rock Band 2 is going to build onto the super-smooth and successful original. I love the fact that they’re adding a battle of the bands mode and that the world tour mode will go to Xbox Live. This next round of music games should have even better set lists as more and more bands realize the popularity and revenue stream potential of these games. Sign me up for a copy upon release (sans the instruments):

Rock Band and Karaoke Revolution

// June 7th, 2008 // No Comments » // Friends, Gaming, Personal Crap

IMG_2477Uneventful and low-key day here at the Keefers.

We did finally meet up with our good friends Bret and Tina this afternoon and evening in Durham. Amanda hadn’t seen either of them in awhile and we always have a good time hanging out.

With all of our travel, and miscellaneous activities, it’s kep us from hanging out with them (or really anyone). Hell, I hadn’t even played Bret online on Xbox Live except one time in the past few weeks.

IMG_2498The four of us started over at Frankie’s for some Go-Kart, arcade, skee-ball, etc. action. Then we headed over to our restaurant of choice when we all get together in this area – Wild Wild Cafe, with dessert at Maggie Moo’s.

Eventually we ended back here for the staple of Rock Band (World Tour), even getting Amanda in on vocals for a few tracks. Bret and I especially are getting pretty damn good with him on drums, and me on guitar. At some point, it’d be great to make a serious dent in the World Tour mode.

IMG_2488We also introduced them to the Xbox 360′s first version of the Karaoke Revolution series, explaining the pictures in this post. It’s not as much fun in my humble opinion as rocking out with a four piece band in Rock Band (especially if they would get back on releasing good new downloadable tracks!) Keefer Madness needs more unique photos. We need a few of us doing the Rock Band thing. Oh well, maybe next time. Regardless, the 360 with group games rocks, especially with good friends.
