Five iOS Apps for the Cycling Enthusiast

// July 16th, 2011 // No Comments » // Cycling, iPad, iPhone

Cycling Sign Very timely post over at tuaw.com as the 2011 Tour de France is 14 stages (with Garmin-Cervelo sprinter Thor Hushovd taking yesterday’s stage in his world champion colors).

Here’s a nice little list of apps for the cycling enthusiast. I’d also add RunKeeper app and web site as well. The app is free now. I recently bought the elite setup too so my wife and son can track my rides when I’m out and about on my two wheels. While it’s not as accurate as my Garmin 500 GPS on my handlebars, the near-live location update is great piece-of-mind for the wifey.

If you’ve had your eye on an app or two, this weekend might be the perfect time to pull the trigger!

iPad 2 – My Thoughts

// March 2nd, 2011 // 1 Comment » // Apple

OK, I’d be remiss if I didn’t chime in on Apple’s iPad 2 announced today. If you’ve already got the original, there’s not really anything here to make you want to upgrade. Sure, it’s got cameras front and back now, matching the iPod and iPhone, and it’s faster and thinner, but the second generation in my mind is just tweaking the original. There were rumors that the iPad might go carbon fiber. Being a bike geek, I’d love to see the iPad wrapped in carbon fiber. When it does, I might have to request an iPad of my own.

Honestly though, the coolest thing about the iPad 2 is its newly-redesigned magnetic case, which covers the screen, making the screen sleep instantly. It also folds to allow the iPad to be propped up securely in either landscape or portrait. To me, that’s the coolest feature of the second generation iPad.

I think I’ll hold out for the third one, in the hopes of it being more evolutionary and some carbon fiber.

NFL Could Replace Play Books with iPads

// February 6th, 2011 // No Comments » // Apple, Sports Stuff, Tech

As the Super Bowl gets ready to start here in a little bit, thought it was appropriate to post this today, though I really don’t see this happening anytime soon. You’re talking about talking a durable little book and replacing it with a $499+ fragile piece of hardware. Sure, it would offer up some cool applications, sharing and networking stuff, but so many head coaches are antiquated dinosaurs. I just don’t see it happening, nor really the need.

iKlip Attaches iPad to Mic Stand, Musicians Rejoice

// January 5th, 2011 // No Comments » // Apple, Music

This would be perfect in our household for setting an iPad up while reading guitar tablature and playing the guitar — that is if a computer weren’t within a few feet of the guitar and amplifier. Regardless, it’s a cool little idea, and could come in handy for all kinds of musicians/iPad geeks.

Time Warner Cable iPad App to Deliver On-Demand TV Streaming

// August 15th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, Internet / Web, Tech

iPadHow many times have you actually said, “man, it’s great being a Time Warner Cable customer?” You can probably count on one hand, while still making a fist. But, this sounds promising. Time Warner is supposedly developing an app for the iPad to stream television content — both live and on-demand stuff. Now if I only had an iPad. Hopefully, it’ll get released for the iPhone as well.

iTunes Enhancements and Additions I Want to See

// April 29th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, Computers

iTunesiTunes has come a long way from its OS X only roots of being merely a way to organize and play your music. It’s now more of a media hub — pretty crucial to all consumer electronics products Apple has released — iPods, iPhones, iPads and even the AppleTV. It’s now includes their store for music, videos, podcasts and applications.

Smart playlists are awesome and are the feature I love the most. The fairlty recently added genius setup is wonderful too. But like every hot-headed consumer, I want more. Below are a list of things that I’d love to see Apple implement with iTunes:

A Few Weeks Since the iPad Launch

// April 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple

iPadI’ve obviously been spending more time in the Apple Store these days, and got my hands on it iPad, and have gotten to play around with a whole slew of apps. Let me first say, the screen is great. The size is perfect. But I’m still not rushing out and getting one. I’m not as anti-iPad as I once was, cause like I had originally said, I wanted to hold and play with one and would reserve judgment.

I really like the book reader, and any video playing on it was great. I played a couple videos of our little boy that had been posted on YouTube and it was amazing little clear and brought a big smile to my face. The wife has started to come around on the device, and showing her Tyler on it would probably bring her over the edge.

Apple Announces 4.0 iPhone Software

// April 9th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, iPhone, Software, Tech

iPhone 3GSYesterday, Apple announced the fourth major version of the operating system for the iPhone hardware (and iPod Touch and now the iPad as well). Out of all the little features, most of it did not pique my interest a bit. The only thing that I’ll be really ready for is multitasking — like copy and paste of 3.0, this is a feature that should have rolled out long ago. The only other thing that seems like I’ll use in this fourth iteration of the software is Apple’s Game Center, which looks a lot like a mobile version of Microsoft’s Xbox Live — a way to track and play multiplayer games on the mobile device platform. Oh, I guess the folders thing will be nice too — throwing my page and half of games into a single folder. But still, not a major enhancement in my opinion.

There was no mention that I’m aware of, but it should roll out to all iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch hardware. The question is will there be limitations on older hardware of which features are available? Apple released a preview/developers version yesterday, and 4.0 will be available mid-summer for the rest of us. Edit: The AppleInsider article linked below mentions the availability:

The 2008 iPhone 3G and 2G iPod touch will get “many things,” but will not support multitasking, as their hardware is significantly slower and has less installed RAM.

iPhone OS 4.0 will ship for iPad this fall.

You can view the 4.0 entire event on Apple’s site as well for all the nitty gritty details.

TiVo Premiere's Keyboard Surprises! (Wireless, IP)

// April 3rd, 2010 // No Comments » // Tech, TiVo Bytes

TiVoSo here’s some good news for all of those TiVo fanboys out there who have snagged, or are going to snag TiVo’s newest hardware/software combo. TiVo is soon releasing a modified peanut remote control that has a full QWERTY keyboard. But as of now, it looks like most wireless computer keyboards will work. Plus, like the TiVo HD, there is IP control available, which means the Android Apps and the App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will soon have plenty of virtual controllers that are compatible with the Series 4 TiVo.
