iPhone Case with Flip-Out Keyboard

// September 24th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Apple, iPhone, Tech

iPhone Case Flip Out KeyboardThis seems pretty cool for all of those out there that love the interface and apps of the iPhone, but still want the tactile feel of a physical keyboard. As the post title infers, the keyboard is built into the case, and is bluetooth, so there’s no extra wires or bulk there. ThinkGeek is coming out with a iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 version of this case, both estimated to ship late November.

It’d be cool if ThinkGeek would send me a review unit of this to try out and review.

Finding Cases for the iPhone 4

// August 26th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Apple, iPhone

Finding Cases for the iPhone 4With the free case program for the iPhone 4 taking weeks (or months depending on the case you select), there have to be other options, right? The local Apple Stores have nothing for the iPhone 4 in terms of cases. AT&T is not much better. Thankfull, there’s the Internet. Gizmodo did a nice write up some sub $5 cases that fit the bill of being light, protective and affordable.

I particularly like the Monoprice TPU Case options, available in a variety of colors. Though, at $3.76, the Meritline case seems like a real bargain (and order is already placed!).

How the Next iPhone Will Improve Your Productivity

// May 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, iPhone

iPhone 3GSI’m not sure how much these will actually boost my productivity, but I am really going to utilize the crap out of the app folders and multitasking. The calendar API sounds pretty cool, but hasn’t gotten much press — then again it may be a little a little too technical to get a lot of writeups.

A Stupidly Simple iPhone App My Son Loves

// May 19th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, Baby, iPhone, Software

Talking CarlMy little eight-month old boy is definitely my son. He loves gadgets. He loves swinging around the peanut-shaped TiVo remote, loves all his toys that talk, beep and flash. He also absolutely loves Mommy and Daddy’s iPhones.

He’s in a very tactile stage right now — loving to explore with his hands, everything — from the wainscoting on his nursery wall, to the texture of fabrics. Seeing as the iPhone is a touchscreen and lights up and plays sounds, it’s the ultimate device for him and Daddy alike.

I’ve downloaded my share of simple and stupid apps — though I’ve mostly limited it to free ones. My wife may question this number. Since working at the Apple Store, I’ve learned more than my share of new info related to all things Apple: hardware, software, accessories and apps. The other day, I learned something from a customer looking at the iPad, and asking about existing apps for her iPhone working on the iPad. I asked if there were any specific apps that she wanted me to look up. She jokingly said, “Talking Carl.”

It’s a very simple app, that has a little red pseudo-3D rendering of a little creature who laughs, makes various noises and mimics what you say via the iPhone’s (or iPad’s or iPod Touch’s) built in mic/speaker combo.

The thing cost $0.99, but it was well worth all 99 pennies after seeing my little boy’s reaction, with it running, while in his little hands. The laughs and giggles are so freaking great. I’ve got to get it on video some time. It’s amazing how something so simple can bring him (and us in turn) so much joy.

iTunes Enhancements and Additions I Want to See

// April 29th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, Computers

iTunesiTunes has come a long way from its OS X only roots of being merely a way to organize and play your music. It’s now more of a media hub — pretty crucial to all consumer electronics products Apple has released — iPods, iPhones, iPads and even the AppleTV. It’s now includes their store for music, videos, podcasts and applications.

Smart playlists are awesome and are the feature I love the most. The fairlty recently added genius setup is wonderful too. But like every hot-headed consumer, I want more. Below are a list of things that I’d love to see Apple implement with iTunes:

Safari's Got Some Competition on the iPhone

// April 14th, 2010 // No Comments » // iPhone

Just a quick note here tonight from WordPress’ iPhone app about another app.

Surprisingly, Apple approved Opera for the iPhone yesterday, and it’s available for download for free from the app store.

I’ve gotten to play around with it a bit yesterday and today. It seems a bit faster (I’ve read reports of up to 50% faster!) I like speed, but I love that it includes the ability to search for text within pages. I’ve always thought that was a major missing feature in Mobile Safari.

Regardless, I think it’s worth experimenting with Opera on the iPhone if you do any surfing on the iPhone. Now if we could just get Firefox on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad!

Steve Jobs Weighs in on iPhone OS Dev Controversy

// April 13th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, iPhone, Software

Apple LogoI’m a bit of an Apple fan, to say the least, but not real happy with the direction they’re heading with lockdown — or at least when they are touting it as a quality control thing, when it’s clearly not. I agree with the recent musings of my bud John Zhu and then today’s article linked below from Ars Technica.

Apple has always been very controlling of its products — especially with Steve Jobs at the helm, but it’s now becoming more evident as their market share grows with the popularity of the iPhone, iPad, etc. It’s not about quality control. It’s just about control. Ars Technica says it as succinctly and as well as I could:

The new 3.3.1 terms tie developers’ hands, yet do nothing to ensure that applications are high quality or that platform features are exploited by software developers. In our view, the targets remain Adobe and Android, and everyone—except perhaps Apple—still loses.

Apple Announces 4.0 iPhone Software

// April 9th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, iPhone, Software, Tech

iPhone 3GSYesterday, Apple announced the fourth major version of the operating system for the iPhone hardware (and iPod Touch and now the iPad as well). Out of all the little features, most of it did not pique my interest a bit. The only thing that I’ll be really ready for is multitasking — like copy and paste of 3.0, this is a feature that should have rolled out long ago. The only other thing that seems like I’ll use in this fourth iteration of the software is Apple’s Game Center, which looks a lot like a mobile version of Microsoft’s Xbox Live — a way to track and play multiplayer games on the mobile device platform. Oh, I guess the folders thing will be nice too — throwing my page and half of games into a single folder. But still, not a major enhancement in my opinion.

There was no mention that I’m aware of, but it should roll out to all iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch hardware. The question is will there be limitations on older hardware of which features are available? Apple released a preview/developers version yesterday, and 4.0 will be available mid-summer for the rest of us. Edit: The AppleInsider article linked below mentions the availability:

The 2008 iPhone 3G and 2G iPod touch will get “many things,” but will not support multitasking, as their hardware is significantly slower and has less installed RAM.

iPhone OS 4.0 will ship for iPad this fall.

You can view the 4.0 entire event on Apple’s site as well for all the nitty gritty details.

TiVo Premiere's Keyboard Surprises! (Wireless, IP)

// April 3rd, 2010 // No Comments » // Tech, TiVo Bytes

TiVoSo here’s some good news for all of those TiVo fanboys out there who have snagged, or are going to snag TiVo’s newest hardware/software combo. TiVo is soon releasing a modified peanut remote control that has a full QWERTY keyboard. But as of now, it looks like most wireless computer keyboards will work. Plus, like the TiVo HD, there is IP control available, which means the Android Apps and the App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will soon have plenty of virtual controllers that are compatible with the Series 4 TiVo.

Flash on the iPhone, in Demo Form

// January 13th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apple, Internet / Web, iPhone

iPhone 3GSEven though Apple says no, the people say yes, a demo of Flash running on the iPhone — at least in a convoluted way.

I’m wondering if in the higher-powered next generation iPhone (and tablet) if we’ll finally see Apple break down and have actual support for the Flash browser plugin.
