Raleigh Poised to Become Bike-Friendly

// April 24th, 2010 // No Comments » // Cycling, Local (Raleigh Durham)

Raleigh Poised to Become Bike-FriendlyOrganically and slowly, it seems North Carolina’s capital city is becoming more and more friendly to the two-wheeled riders on its street, though the article linked below is linking bike-friendly and bike lanes as virtually one and the same, which in some ways is true. If more government money is being used on projects for on-road cycling, that is a step towards making the tarmac more bike friendly. But for me, the real litmus test has to do with motorists’ on-street attitudes when encountering, passing and interacting with us on the road. Regardless, kudos to Raleigh for funneling more money to bicycle safety.

Carolina Hurricanes to Host All-Star Game

// April 8th, 2010 // No Comments » // Local (Raleigh Durham), Sports Stuff

Carolina HurricanesThis was rumored to be true yesterday. Now it’s official. Back in 2004, the NHL Entry Draft was held at the RBC Center, but now the NHL has announced that Raleigh will host the NHL All-Star game in January 2011. Pretty cool. I just hope everyone coming into town for the game can figure out where to go to eat, as the area around the RBC is a wasteland — removed from downtown Raleigh and requiring a vehicle to get to just about any entertainment and grub outside of the RBC Center itself.

Performance Bicycles Opening in Raleigh

Bike Route w ArrowSweet! Another Performance Bike shop is opening in the area — this one in Raleigh in the form of a 9,000 square foot Sutton Square shopping center store.

Performance is great for getting low-cost cycling accessories. I especially like them for affordable clothing and clothing-type accessories.

The Raleigh shop will be opening May 2010.

Tyler and Daddy in the SnowSo central North Carolina got its annual one snowfall this weekend to the tune of about 6 inches here at the Keefers’ abode. Last year, we got a similar amount just a few weeks earlier in January. Being born in Pennsylvania and growing up in the early teens in Baltimore, it’s still funny to see how poorly the roads are taken care of here. It’s hard not to laugh. Anyway, our hilly neighborhood is at an even bigger disadvantage — the roads have yet to be finished with their final grading, meaning manhole covers, water main access, etc. continue to protrude higher than the rest. This means a snow plow could never plow our neighborhood streets.

But as it turns out, it doesn’t really matter.

Good to Be Back in the Saddle

bike-routeSo Amanda had a great revelation recently — with Tyler keeping us busy day and night and the fact that we’re in the middle of the short daylight hours of winter, she suggested I take to the road on my bikes at lunch at work. Today, I did just that and it felt good and refreshing. The cold, just above freezing temperatures were no match for my layers of cycling gear.

Since Ty’s birth, I’ve only been on a couple road and mountain rides each, and it’s exciting to have a workable solution to get back into a regular riding routine. I didn’t get a ton of miles in, but was able to criss-cross through a bunch of Raleigh roads, exploring a bit.

Trying out GeoCaching: Good Family and Friend Fun

// August 7th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // iPhone, Local (Raleigh Durham)

Our First Geo Cache FIndSo I never really understood geocaching, nor its appeal till I gave it a try yesterday, and now I’m freaking hooked, and I might have inadvertently hooked a couple of friends and family as well.

A couple weeks back, watching an episode of The Totally Rad Show where they gave geocaching a try in Los Angeles. Geocaching is basically a guided outdoor treasure hunt, utilizing a GPS device — in my case an iPhone 3GS to find a marked location of a treasure or cache. There are over 800,000 caches worldwide currently and growing. Caches can vary greatly in size from little bullet-like containers to large barrels.

The Totally Rad Show suggested an app on the store — Groundspeak’s Geocaching iPhone Application, which I downloaded, though it’s a bit pricey. It’s $9.99, but has been worth it in the day I’ve had it. The iPhone app links up to GeoCaching.com and allows you to use the app to report on caching in realtime (as long as you’ve got a cell signal). The only caveat is that keeping the GPS running so long will take its toll on your battery.

Raleigh City Council Approves Amphitheater Plan Funding

// August 4th, 2009 // No Comments » // Local (Raleigh Durham), Music

Raleigh SkylineGood news for Raleigh, North Carolina area residents. It seems Walnut Creek will have a little sister Amphitheater downtown to house smaller music events. It should allow for some smaller acts to have a convenient/accessible outdoor venue to compliment Walnut Creek and Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheater.
