How Skynet Might Emerge From Simple Physics

// May 22nd, 2013 // No Comments » // Computers, Tech

Came across this the other day after discussing how there’s already a network called Skynet (since 1969). Then, the next day, I realized that the worldwide network, data storage and information storage that Google has amassed is way scarier than anything any of the Terminator movies depict.

Regardless, Skynet may emerge from simple physics — chaos theory and entropy.

Ian Hickson on Digital Rights Management (DRM)

Love this Google Plus post that Google employee Ian Hickson did on DRM — very in-depth and brings up a lot of good points, and simultaneously shoots down a lot of DRM proponents’ arguments and points.

The Death of the True Sports Car

// March 22nd, 2013 // No Comments » // Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Tech

I’m a huge fan of technology — in general it makes tasks easier, faster and more efficient.

All of the above holds true for the automobile as well. But while making the car safer and easier, it also deadens the experience some — taking away some of the skill and thrill of driving a vehicle on the edge of its limits. Additions like assistive braking technologies, traction control, etc. make the car safer, but make the driver dumber.

Two Services I Recommend Without Hesitation

I’ve always used Keefer Madness to communicate reviews and to to tell you about times when we’ve had less than optimal service. But here are two that I have no hesitation in recommending.

3D Printing: Mouse Ears Defeat Corner Curling Monster

// January 6th, 2013 // No Comments » // Tech

I was just starting to dial in the white ABS plastic extruder on my dual extruder MakerBot Replicator when it fried itself. Still waiting on replacement parts to get it back in working order, but already have been trying to read up and prep to make the first print after it’s in working order completely successful.

I definitely want to try switching materials (PLA instead of the included ABS plastic), but adding these “mouse ears” seems like a good solution as well.

Philips Hue: the ‘World’s Smartest’ LED Lightbulb That Saves You Time During Red Alerts

// October 29th, 2012 // No Comments » // Apple, Tech

My friend and co-worker clued me into this new LED Lightbulb tech this morning. The starter pack is $200 (!) for three bulbs and a hub that can control a slew of these bulbs. Definitely not going to be an early adopter on this. But thought it was a cool concept that could be great as the price for the technology comes down.

Weirdest thing to me is that it’s an Apple Store exclusive. I get that it’s wi-fi driven and has an iOS app to control it, but seems a weird thing to be an Apple Store exclusive.

Apple is definitely dipping its toes in the home automation between this and the Nest thermostat. Hopefully, their eventual Apple branded stuff will be better than those pop-up advertised X11 crap.

My co-worker, Michael Delaney shared this on our company’s internal blog. Had to share, as the interface is great and supposedly just works. Check out the article’s video for a great demo of it at work.

I saw this yesterday morning and meant to post it. I’m really excited about this, and need to check it out this weekend, though I’ve got a backlog of books (25% through the new Steve Jobs biography).

Regardless, the Kindle lending through the local libraries is quite underwhelming. I’m hoping this is a bit more intriguing and offers a lot more selections.

Bike Riding Robot

Check out this biped robot riding a bike. I wouldn’t want to be in a placeline with the thing, but very very impressive nonetheless.
